Green Chemistry, also known as sustainable chemistry, is a field that focuses on designing chemical processes and products that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. It aims to minimize the environmental impact of chemical production while enhancing the efficiency of resources. The 12 principles of green chemistry, established by Paul Anastas and John Warner in 1998, provide guidelines for scientists to innovate in ways that are both environmentally friendly and economically viable. These principles include waste reduction, energy efficiency, renewable feedstocks, and safer chemicals.

One of the most significant impacts of green chemistry is in reducing pollution through cleaner production processes. By using non-toxic raw materials, creating energy-efficient processes, and reducing the amount of waste generated, green chemistry helps industries operate in harmony with the environment. It plays a vital role in developing eco-friendly alternatives to traditional chemicals used in manufacturing, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.

As a lecturer in chemistry, I emphasize the importance of green chemistry not only in reducing harmful environmental effects but also in creating sustainable economic opportunities. The field is a crucial aspect of addressing global challenges like climate change and resource depletion, fostering innovation, and promoting a sustainable future for generations to come.
